At the battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, hundreds of casualties were left between the lines. By afternoon, wounded Union soldiers lying helpless faced a new danger: flames, started by the battle's gunfire that crept steadily toward them.
Lieutenant Colonel William P. Martin, commanding the First and Fifteenth Consolidated Arkansas Regiment, jumped onto the earthworks and ordered his Confederates to cease fire. Waving a white flag of truce, Martin shouted to the Federals, "Come and remove your wounded. They are burning to death."
For a brief time, Northerners and Southerners alike rescued the wounded and put out the fire. The next day, Union officers presented Martin with a pair of Colt revolvers in appreciation of his humanitarian act. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Question here - Think about what the Union Officer gave the Confederate Officer......two pistols, no doubt they will be used later to kill Union soldiers.
I'm not taking away the great thing the Confederate officer did or for what the Union officer did. I think I would have found something else to give an enemy other then two pistols.
What do you think?

I would imagine that they had to make a gift of whatever they had at hand, and that would be firearms or some other equipment.
When you think about it, a pair of Colt pistols is a gift of honor. The Yanks knew the odds were they would be used on Union forces later (perhaps even themselves!), but when compared to the act of chivalry Lt Col Martin showed it was of small consequence.
