Press Release Source: Violence Policy Center Wisconsin Hunter Murders Show Need for Effective - Armed Hunters No Match for SKS Assault Rifle Monday November 22, 12:41 pm ET President Has Power to Fully Ban Import of All Foreign-Made Assault Rifles Such as SKSs and AK-47s WASHINGTON, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- SKS assault rifles like the one reported to have been used to murder five hunters and wound three others in Wisconsin over the weekend are a primary threat to police, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) reported today. So far in 2004, at least six law enforcement officers have been slain by SKSs. In the wake of the shooting, the VPC called on President George W. Bush today to use the Administration's executive authority over firearm imports to fully ban the import of all foreign-made assault rifles. Such an action would not require Congressional approval. The Bush Administration has specifically authorized the importation of SKS assault rifles from both Yugoslavia and Albania. "Armed hunters were no match for one person firing an SKS assault rifle," said Kristen Rand, VPC legislative director. "This sad incident illustrates why the SKS is also a leading cop-killing rifle in America today." Rand pointed out that the SKS assault rifle was not covered by the recently expired 1994 federal assault weapons ban. The VPC criticized the 1994 law as inadequate and favors enactment of a tougher version of the law that would ban the SKS and many other assault weapons that easily slipped through the old law's loopholes. "Even though the 1994 law was easily circumvented by the gun industry, Congress has failed to move on a strong replacement law. President Bush could, with the stroke of a pen, tighten the import ban and stop the import of all foreign-made assault rifles," Rand said. She noted that both the President's father, former-President George H.W. Bush, and former-President William J. Clinton stopped the import of hundreds of thousands of assault weapons by using their executive authority under firearms import and trade laws. Under the current Bush Administration, specific foreign-made assault rifles, including some SKSs, have returned to the marketplace. I guess those hunters would have been less dead it the hunter only had a "non-Assault-rifle".

I guess those hunters would have been less dead it the hunter only had a "non-Assault-rifle". Exactly Twayne. I am not bragging, but I shot perfect scores each time I went to the range for qualification. I still train and could easily drop 5 out of 8 hunters in the woods w/ a bolt action rifle. A determined marksman, or raving lunatic w/ knowledge of marksmanship, could have done the same as this nut.

I haven't delved too much into the article myself either but, like you said, with 7-8 hunters shooting back there's no excuse for so many dead, no matter what they were armed with. It's probably all a mental problem. Those hunters came to the woods to shoot animals, not humans. When the "fight or flight" instinct grabbed ahold of them they unfortunately probably all chose the flight option. I wonder how many were shot in the back? Now the SKS is a "Cop-Killer" weapon! First I've heard of that! Man, I better run out and buy one if they're that superior!!! LOL! God Save the South, CornFedReb

Apparently when the crap hit the fan these people froze or paniced. If they had had any sense, or any training at all in militia tactics, they would have sought cover and returned fire, not stood there like statues getting picked off one after the other. I would sure like to see the "definition" of a "cop killer" weapon. Last time I looked, any weapon, from a baseball bat to a nuclear missile could kill a police officer. Does that mean all of them should be outlawed?

This killer also could be linked to another killing about three years ago.....so, the AWB didn't help three years ago and it wouldn't help if "they " brought it back.
Side note.......Only a full auto is an AW....not a semi-suto.
