Tell me if you folks think this might be a useful addition to any emergency supplies / survival cache. It's the Nightstar - Magnetic Force Emergency Light Needs NO batteries, NO bulbs and NO maintenance. You could probably store it for 20 years and it would be ready to use as soon as you pick it up. You don't have to worry about corroded or dead batteries or broken bulbs. It uses a sliding magnet to produce light from an LED. Shake it 30 seconds and you get light for 20 minutes. It has a 5 year warranty. Does anyone here have any experience with one? I'd like to try one out in person before buying one. www.nightstar1.com/index.htmGod Save the South, CornFedReb

You know I have actually seen one of these at one of those gadget kiosks in a local mall. It was around Xmas time last year & I spied it when shopping for my stepdad. The salesperson demonstrated it by shaking it for about 20-30 seconds than turning it on. I liked what I saw, but was a bit skeptical, so I passed. If I remember correctly they were selling it for like $59.95.
If it lives up to the hype on their website, and the 5 year warranty is legit, I think it is well worth the price of $39.95 plus S&H. Think of how much room & weight you would save in a survival pack if you don't have to pack batteries! The savings in cost of batteries alone would make it worth it in a year of use, or one prolonged use in an emergency situation.

$59.95!!!!! Holy Cow! I was hoping for more like the $30.00 level but I guess I'm too cheap!
I meant to call the local distributor today to see if he still carries them and at what price but I jerked around until after 5:00 PM and didn't get through on the phone.
Hmmmm. Is the $39.95 price something you saw somewhere else or is that just a price you would be willing to pay, GrayGhost? I didn't see anything on the website about a price and figured that was being left up to the actual distributors but I might have missed it.
I hate to shell out that kind of cash for a flashlight but you are correct is the savings on batteries. Also, in an emergency situation where you HAD TO HAVE light a person might pay any price to be able to see reliably. It's all insurance.
One thing that appeals most to me is not having to open up a cache every year or two to change out batteries for a flashlight.

God Save the South, CornFedReb Check out this link: www.nightstar1.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PLST&Store_Code=AITI This is on their site when you click on "Where to Buy", then click on "Buy Online". You are right in the saved trouble and effort of digging up a cache to replace dead batteries. This little baby is good for 5 years according to the warranty, longer I imagine if it not being used. Here are some of the selling points (under technical data): - The rare earth magnets used in NightStar are composed of neodymium, iron, and boron. The magnets possess very high magnetic field strengths and are extremely resistant to demagnetization. - The capacitor operates perfectly well in hot and cold environments, can be recharged several hundred thousand times, and will not corrode. - The solid state LED (Light Emitting Diode) is practically unbreakable, has a rated lifetime of ten's of thousands of hours, and will produce 350-foot candles of light at peak brightness. - The magnetic on/off switch is reliable, watertight and non-sparking. - The housing of the flashlight is waterproof - Weight / Mass / Length: 11 ounces / 308 grams / 10" (25.4 cm) For the price it is well worth the buy.
